The word Proboscis means long nosed. The Proboscis Monkey is a mammal and can get up to the size of 24 to 28 inches. The Proboscis Monkey is an omnivore which means to eat plants and meat. It eats things such as leaves and bugs occasionally. It can also eat fruit that's unripe. If it eats a ripe kind of fruit its stomach becomes bloated. Its scientific name is Nasalis Iarvatus. The Monkey lives on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. In the past the Proboscis Monkey was critically endangered, but since the government began protecting the monkey it's become only endangered. The reason for why the Monkey has become endangered is deforestation. Deforestation is caused when humans tear down trees to put in things for us to use. Another reason for why the Proboscis Monkey has become endangered is poachers. Poachers killed the proboscis monkey to sell its nose. Today there is only seven thousand Proboscis Monkeys alive. People all around are trying to help by starting foundations to reforestation. |
